Court updates this week
More often than not, updates posted to the court’s website involve specific process changes for single departments or divisions.
However as coronavirus cases in California grow, some courts are re-implementing court holidays and extending other time period guidelines.
Butte County
The Court has declared July 20, 2020 to August 3, 2020 holidays for the purposes of computing time under certain Welfare and Institutions Codes. The Emergency Order also extended time periods provided for certain circumstances.
Given the number of new cases in the county, the Court also required the use of telephonic appearances in certain cases.
Marin County
For the purposes of computing time, the Court has declared July 20, 2020 to August 18, 2020 to be court holidays. The Order also permitted sessions to be held anywhere in the county during that time period, extended time periods provided, and allowed any judge to make use of available technology for remote proceedings and court operations.
Orange County
At the beginning of the year, the Court released a new Local Rule regarding how to reference already filed documents when filing new documents in relation to earlier filings. As of this month, the Court has enabled technical requirements for this on their end and are now enforcing this rule.
According to the announcement released by the court, “Local Rule 314A requires electronic documents filed with or in response to another filed document to include on the first page the Register of Actions (“ROA”) number of the related document.
“For law and motion documents, filers should add “(Related to ROA # __)” where the field after “ROA #” is the Register of Action number for the related Notice of Motion.”
Riverside County
The Court has extended closures of Corona, Moreno Valley, Temecula, and Hemet courthouses as well as the Riverside Self-Help Center and Records Center through August 7th.
San Bernardino County
The Court has amended its General Order to confirm requirements around wearing face coverings and maintaining social distance when at a courthouse.
San Diego County
The Juvenile Courthouse has declared July 20 to July 31, inclusive, to be holidays for the purposes of computing time for filing papers.
Santa Clara County
For criminal cases, the Court extended the time period provided within which to hold a trial.
Ventura County
The Court updated its re-opening guidelines on July 23rd, limiting access to the courtrooms and implementing screening and physical distancing expectations.
