In the fast-paced world of litigation, legal professionals handle a multitude of case-related expenses every day.
Whether it’s court filing fees, process serving, or other litigation costs, managing these expenses efficiently can mean the difference between a well-organized case and a financial nightmare.
That’s why we are thrilled to introduce our new feature designed to streamline your expense tracking and billing processes: the Matters Billing Tab.
After months of development and feedback from hundreds of legal professionals, we’re excited to unveil this feature that centralizes all your One Legal transactions by matter, making billing and reporting more intuitive than ever before.
The high stakes of expense tracking
Whether you’re a solo practitioner or a large firm, tracking litigation-related expenses is a fundamental part of managing a successful case.
From court filing fees to process serving and skip traces, the costs associated with litigation can add up quickly. Without a proper tracking system, law firms risk losing track of expenses, leading to billing inefficiencies, unpaid invoices, and even lost recoverable costs.
Through our research and client surveys, we found that most law firms use matter numbers to organize their expenses. This insight became the foundation of our new Matters Billing Tab, ensuring that One Legal integrates seamlessly into your existing workflow.
Expense tracking challenges
Tracking expenses is a common challenge for law firms, often leading to inefficiencies and administrative headaches.
Key issues include:
- Invoices scattered across multiple vendors
- Court fees and service costs aren’t centralized
- Manual reconciliation of costs takes too much time
- A lack of detailed breakdowns for compliance with leads billing requirements
- Difficulty in retrieving and organizing historical billing data
One Legal already simplifies litigation expense management by providing a single, detailed PDF invoice for each order—eliminating the need to track multiple payments or chase down scattered receipts.
However, some challenges remained. The PDF format made data reporting difficult, and there was no easy way to view all costs associated with multiple jobs within the same case.
Introducing the Matters Billing tab
The Matters Billing tab gives law firms an easy way to view and report on all charges for a case—or multiple related cases—in one centralized location.
Here’s what you can expect:
Complete billing history
All charges related to a matter are now stored in a single location, providing a full history of invoices for up to seven years. No more hunting for invoices or reconciling disparate records—it’s all there, instantly accessible.
Clear breakdown of charges
The new tab displays:
- One Legal charges (e.g., filing and service of process fees)
- Court disbursements (e.g., statutory court filing fees, witness fees, sheriff’s fees)
- Payment status (paid or outstanding)
This detailed breakdown ensures full transparency and easier compliance with cost-reporting requirements.
Advanced filtering options
Quickly locate specific transactions by filtering by:
- Matter number
- Case name
- User
- Court
- Payment status
This means you can find exactly what you need in seconds, saving valuable administrative time.
Bulk download of invoices and reports
Gone are the days of downloading invoices one by one.
With the new Export feature, you can:
- Download all invoices for a matter in a single zip file
- Export a comprehensive spreadsheet with all billing details, perfect for accounting software integration
Detailed expense reports for cost recovery and compliance
Legal professionals working on cost memorandums or lead billing compliance will love this feature.
The spreadsheet export provides a line-item breakdown of every charge, categorized properly for:
- Filing cost recovery
- Client invoicing
- Lead billing compliance
- This ensures that every dollar spent on litigation support services can be accounted for and reimbursed where applicable.
The future of litigation expense management
With this new feature, we’re taking another step toward making One Legal the single-source solution for all your litigation support needs.
By centralizing billing data and providing powerful reporting tools, we’re helping law firms save time, avoid errors, reduce administrative burdens, and gain greater financial oversight.
